Zoloft is the brand name for sertraline, an SSRI antidepressant used for depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD, PMDD, and social anxiety disorder. It is not a weight-loss medicine, but some people notice weight loss early in treatment because of nausea, reduced appetite, stomach upset, or increased anxiety.
Weight change with Zoloft is not the same in every person. Early weight loss can happen, especially in the first weeks, but longer-term use may also lead to stable weight or even weight gain in some users. Because of this, “zoloft weight loss” should not be treated as a reliable or intended effect.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, sweating, tremor, dizziness, headache, insomnia, fatigue, and reduced appetite. Reduced appetite is one of the main reasons some people lose weight at first. In others, improvement in depression may restore appetite, which can have the opposite effect over time.
Important warnings include worsening depression, agitation, suicidal thoughts, serotonin syndrome, abnormal bleeding risk, low sodium, and sexual dysfunction. It should not be stopped suddenly because withdrawal symptoms can occur.
Zoloft can interact with tramadol, MAOIs, linezolid, triptans, St. John’s wort, NSAIDs, and blood thinners. Alcohol may worsen side effects.
If weight loss on Zoloft is marked, persistent, or associated with vomiting, severe diarrhea, poor nutrition, or feeling physically weak, it should be taken seriously rather than viewed as a useful benefit.
